What it is

What is drywall finishing?

Drywall finishing is the final stage of drywall work that prepares the wall or ceiling for paint. After boarding and taping, we apply finish coats of joint compound, sand the surface, and (on Level 5) skim-coat the entire wall so the surface is flat and uniform. We provide Level 4 and Level 5 finishing in Richmond Hill.

What's Included

Drywall Finishing scope.

01
Level 4 paint-ready finish

Joints filled and feathered, fastener heads coated, corner bead skimmed. Surface ready for flat or eggshell paint and standard lighting.

02
Level 5 smooth skim coat

Full skim coat over the entire boarded surface. Eliminates joint shadowing under raking light. The right choice for high-sheen paint, deep colours, and critical lighting.

03
Corner and bead detail

Outside corners run straight and crisp with metal or paper-faced bead. Inside corners taped and feathered for a sharp transition.

04
Sanding and dust control

Pole-sanded and detail-sanded with vacuum extraction where possible. We leave the surface smooth and the work area cleaned down.

05
Lighting-critical surfaces

Extra attention on walls that catch raking light from windows or pot lights. Test under your actual lighting before painting on critical surfaces.

06
Ceilings and skim work

Ceilings flattened with skim or Level 5 finish. Stipple removal and smooth-coat conversion handled in the same scope.

Comparison

Level 4 vs Level 5 drywall finish.

Level 4

The standard finish for most living spaces. Three coats of mud over taped joints and corner bead, fastener heads coated, then sanded. Right for flat or eggshell paint with standard interior lighting. Most homes are finished to Level 4.

Level 5

A thin skim coat over the entire wall surface, not just the joints. Eliminates the visual difference between mudded joints and bare paper. Right for semi-gloss or satin paint, dark or saturated colours, large open walls, and rooms with critical raking light from windows or pot lights.

FAQ

Drywall Finishing, answered.

Common questions about drywall finishing for Richmond Hill, Toronto, and GTA projects.

Start with the paint sheen and the lighting. Flat or eggshell paint in a normally lit room hides joints well, so Level 4 is fine. Semi-gloss, satin, or any glossier paint, combined with raking light from windows or downlights, will show joints, so go Level 5. We walk the rooms with you before quoting.
Level 5 adds the full skim coat plus extra sanding and material. On a typical full home, the cost premium is usually material plus a day or two of labour. We quote both options when the decision is close so you can compare directly.
Yes. This is a common compromise. We Level 5 the long open walls, the great room, and any walls with raking light, and finish secondary spaces (closets, mechanical rooms, less visible walls) to Level 4.
Priming is usually the painter's scope, but we will prime as part of our scope on request. A dedicated drywall primer evens out the porosity difference between bare paper and mudded areas and gives the painter the best starting surface.
Yes. Properly taped, coated, and sanded drywall lasts decades. The most common issues are small cracks at door frames or where the house settles. Those are simple touch-up repairs, not a finishing failure.
